With heavy hearts, we announce the gentle passing of Vera at home surrounded by loved ones. She will be missed greatly by her daughter Anne Marie and son Ed and his wife Claire Barron. Vera was a devoted grandmother to Georgia and Thomas Sluga and Jack and Jodie Barron-Sluga. She was predeceased by her husband Anton to whom she was married for 53 years. She was also predeceased by her son Tony. When Vera was 22 years old, she made the brave decision to leave her home in the former Yugoslavia for a better life. She climbed out her window and, with a friend, escaped to Austria. Eight months later, she ended up in Montreal where she met and married Anton. Together they moved to Toronto and started their family. Vera was a lifelong seamstress but her greatest joy was being a grandmother. Her grandchildren were blessed with a fun-loving, silly grandmother who always carried a hint of caution. Problems were solved with ice cream and she lived by the motto, “What happens at Grandma’s, stays at Grandma’s”. With her generous spirit, she always had time for anyone who needed help. Her door was always open, and people were greeted with love, a mischievous grin and lots of food. Vera passed away with the knowledge that her son had died hours before her and she joined him peacefully. Many thanks to all those who loved and supported her in her declining health. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to Bladder Cancer Canada. Friends will be received at the Ridley Funeral Home, 3080 Lake Shore Blvd. W. (at 14th St., between Islington and Kipling Aves., 416-259-3705) on Monday, July 9, 2018 from 3pm to 8pm. A Funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, July 10, 2018 at 10am at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal. Interment to follow at Assumption Catholic Cemetery. Messages of Condolence may be placed at
