Ted Mercouris, of Thornhill, ON, passed away peacefully at Sunnybrook Hospital on October 7, 2017 after a brief battle with cancer. He was much beloved and visited by family and friends in the weeks before his passing. Born in Maroussi, Athens, Greece in 1930, the second of two sons of Symeon Mercouris and Antigoni Papadopoulos, who were born of Greek origin in Istanbul, Turkey. Ted grew up during the events of World War II and the German occupation of Greece. After the war, he pursued training in radio maintenance. In 1960, he immigrated to Toronto where he met and married Mary Vasilaros. They had two children, Lisa in 1962 and Kelly in 1969. Although Ted and Mary separated in 1971 and eventually divorced, they remained lifelong friends and loved their two daughters. In Toronto, Ted enjoyed his years as a successful real estate agent and then later a career with Via Rail, from which he retired. Ted always enjoyed traveling, returning many times to his native Greece. He also loved selling at swap meets where he would make creative airplane mobiles out of aluminum cans. He will be remembered for his ever ready jokes, challenging riddles and puzzles, but most of all for his warm laugh and kind heart. Ted was predeceased by his father, mother, brother, sister, and by his daughter Lisa Stobbart (nee Mercouris). He is survived by his daughter Kelly Wilbert (Dave), grandchildren Brittany Mercouris-Williams, Alexa and Daniel Wilbert; also by his son-in-law John Stobbart and grandchildren, Anthony, Maria, and Nikolas Stobbart. Visitation to be held at Ridley Funeral Home, 3080 Lake Shore Blvd W (West of Kipling Ave), Toronto on Tuesday October 10, 2017 from 5-8 p.m. Funeral Service will be held at Prophet Elias Greek Orthodox Church, 1785 Matheson Blvd, Mississauga on Wednesday October 11, 2017 at 10 a.m.
